Apple to replace iPhone 5S with “manufacturing issue”

Shortly after the launch of the Apple iPhone 5S, reports began to surface from users of longer than expected charging times and poor battery life. Apple has now confirmed that a “manufacturing issue” is causing such issues on a “very limited” number of devices. It is also addressing the matter by replacing affected phones.

“We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life,” said Teresa Brewer, an Apple spokeswoman in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone.”

A replacement appears to be necessary as the iPhone 5S does not have a removeable battery. It also appears that Apple knows exactly what batch of devices are affected and will reach out to affected customers rather than them having to get in touch with Apple.

While Apple did not indicate how many phones were affected, the report pegs it at “a few thousand.” If so, it is a very small percentage of the 33.8 million iPhones that Apple sold in its latest quarter (although it’s not clear how many are iPhone 5S models specifically).
