BBM adds 20 million users in last week alone

BlackBerry BBM

Following its announcement that it had topped 10 million downloads of BBM for Android and iPhone in the first day of availability, BlackBerry today announced that BBM now has over over 80 million monthly active users (defined as users who send or receive any data through the BBM service within a given 30-day period.) BBM saw 20 million more users join over the last week thanks in large part to BBM for Android and iPhone.

Clearly, the momentum of BBM for BlackBerry, Android and iPhone continues to grow and while we are excited by the download numbers we saw this week, downloads do not speak to the way people interact with each other using BBM and we will now focus on active use of BBM – the connections being made and the conversations in which our BBM community engages.

The real test for BBM will be to not only hang onto its current users but also continue to grow its user base over the coming months. It promises that it has “a few more tricks up our sleeves” and more features, including BBM Voice and Video Calling and BBM Channels, will be added “in the coming months.”

It is now even easier to sign up for BBM. On Saturday, BlackBerry removed the line-up from both Google Play and the App Store, eliminating the need to wait for BlackBerry to let you sign in once you had installed the app. Users are now able to use it as soon as they install it and sign in.

Did you download BBM for Android and iPhone? Are you still using it? Let us know below.
