Google Chromecast named Time’s gadget of the year

2013 may not be quite over but the Top 10 and Best of lists are starting to come out. Among them is Time Magazine’s Top 10 Gadgets. Sitting at the top of the list is the Google Chromecast, the US$35 dongle that lets you cast or stream to your TV video content from your Android smartphone or tablet. While it may not cover every media app or media type out there, the simplicity with which it does those that it does has earned it this award.

Instead of trying to do everything — like Google’s famously ambitious and unsuccessful Google TV — this thumb-sized gizmo does one thing, does it as simply as possible and does it for the impulse-purchase price of $35. Plug it into one of your TV’s HDMI ports, and you can fling videos and other content from your laptop, tablet or phone to the big screen, no wires involved. Lots of companies have built devices to do this; Chromecast is the first one that gets it right.

Other notable gadgets on the top 10 list are the Nokia Lumia 1020 in the tenth spot, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX in seventh, the Pebble Smartwatch in fourth and Apple iPad’s in second. In fact, Apple is the only company to make the list twice with the iPhone 5S coming in fifth.

Sadly, there is still no word on if and when it will be available in Canada.
