Google to launch Gem smartwatch alongside Google Nexus 5?

Google smartwatch concept by T3Here’s an interesting rumour courtesy of Artem Russakovskii, AndroidPolice‘s founder. Google may have one more device up its sleeve for its next event. Alongside the Google Nexus 5 and next-generation Google Nexus 10.1 tablet, it could also announce a smartwatch codenamed Gem.

Little is known about Gem at this point. It remains to be seen if it will be powered by Android 4.4 KitKat. With reports that Google focused on reducing the requirements for the OS with this release, it is certainly plausible. It would presumably also be compatible across a wider range of Android smartphones and tablets than the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch which is currently limited to the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014).

Reports that Google was working on a smartwatch first surfaced this summer. It was effectively confirmed by Google’s acquistion of Android smartwatch maker WIMM Labs. Motorola is also rumoured to be working on a smartwatch. Could the two be one and the same?

In fact, Russakovskii writes that he has several rumours for us and has taken to Google+ to share them: “I have several interesting rumors that I feel relatively confident about but either don’t have visual evidence or a second confirmation.”

Alongside the Gem smartwatch rumour, he suggests that Google’s event will take place on October 31, later than other rumours have suggested but in line with what TechRadar learned yesterday. He warns that his information is about a month old and may have changed since then.

It could be a very interesting Halloween!
