Microsoft launches Office Mobile for Android smartphones

Microsoft Office MobileMicrosoft today launched Office Mobile for Android smartphones. The suite comes with Word, Excel and PowerPoint and allows you to access, view and edit your Microsoft documents directly on your smartphone.

Before you rush over to Google Play to download the free app, be aware that it requires an active Office 365 subscription.

Microsoft Office Mobile is the official Office companion optimized for your Android phone. You can access, view and edit your Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint documents from virtually anywhere. Documents look like the originals, thanks to support for charts, animations, SmartArt graphics and shapes. When you make quick edits or add comments to a document, the formatting and content remain intact.

Microsoft has no plans to bring Office Mobile to Android tablets. It recommends instead the use of Office Web Apps.

Office Mobile is also available for Windows Phone and iOS devices.

Office Mobile for Office 365 for Android is now available via Google Play but only in the U.S. It will be pushed out to additional countries in the coming weeks. It requires Android 4.0+ and an aforementioned Office 365 subscription.
