Microsoft to unveil second generation Surface tablets at September 23rd event

Microsoft Surface September 2013 event

Microsoft will unveil the next generation Surface tablets on September 23rd in New York City. On tap are a new Surface RT and Surface Pro as well as new accessories. As usual, the invitation reveals little but past rumours gave us a good idea of exactly what Microsoft has in store for us.

On the Surface Pro side, we can expect to most of the changes to happen under the hood. The kickstand will see a bit of a redesign but the biggest changes will be the new Intel Haswell processors promising much longer battery life along with the possibility of more RAM and Windows 8.1. It could launch as the Surface Pro 2.

The next Surface RT will see it drop the maligned RT designation and likely launch as the Surface 2. Powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor and Windows RT 8.1, it will come with a 10.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080), 4GB of RAM, a microSD card slot (supporting cards up to 64GB), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, front and rear-facing cameras and a new integrated two-position kickstand. Dimensions and weith are expected to be fairly similar and it may come in both black and white.

Among the accessories could be a new docking station for the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 and a new “Power Cover” that will include a built-in battery for all Surface tablets except the original Surface RT.

Microsoft will also launch a major marketing push during the launch period to promote its new Surface devices.
