Amazon to offer Prime Data plan along with upcoming smartphone?

Rumoured Amazon smartphone

One of the most interesting features on Amazon’s upcoming smartphone could well be its unique user interface that will track the user’s head movements to create 3D effects but it will not be the only one. BGR today reports that Amazon could offer its own data plan with the device. The plan is tentatively named “Prime Data” and will likely be another key selling point.

Details of what the Prime Data plan could entail are reportedly being kept “very close the chest.” Without any details, BGR‘s sources speculate that the plan could offer users of the Amazon smartphone free access to its Prime-branded digital services. The plan could be like a much-enhanced version of Amazon’s Kindle eReader WhisperNet service that offers free connectivity to browse, purchase and download ebooks via Amazon’s online store. It could be offered to Prime subscribers as an add-on to allow them to stream content directly to their Amazon smartphone.

There are other possibilities. Prime Data could be a discount plan that would offer savings over typical smartphone data plans. It could also be a promotional offer that would give users free data for a certain period of time.

While details remain elusive, it’s clear that Amazon is looking at delivering not only a rather unique smartphone but also an experience that revolves around its various services.

Recent rumours have suggested that Amazon will announce its new smartphone sometime in June with shipments to start by late September. It could be followed by a more inexpensive model codenamed Project Aria.
