Android L to come to Google Nexus 4 ?

Google Nexus 4Shortly after unveiling Android L at Google I/o 2014 in late June, Google made available previews of the source code for both the Google Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013). It also made available some partial previews for other Nexus devices like the Nexus 4 but there certainly isn’t enough there for complete builds. It left many wondering whether older Nexus devices would be updated or not. New evidence now suggests that Nexus 4 owners should not give up hope just yet.

Sharp-eyed Google+ users have spotted signs that some Google employees are currently running Android L builds on Nexus 4 smartphones. These come primarily in the form of references in the Chromium section of code.google.com. For example, one reveals a user running build LRW52G on a Nexus 4. In comparison, the latest Android build for the Nexus 5 is LRW66E.

Android L on Nexus 4?

While this is not confirmation that Google will offer an Android L update for the Nexus 4, it does suggest at least that it is perhaps evaluating such an update. As Android Police points out though, Google has already committed to updating Android One smartphones to Android L and the Nexus 4 is a more powerful device than any of these. In other words, hardware is unlikely to be an issue.

Google is expected to unveil Android L and at least one new Nexus device, the Google Nexus 9, in the coming weeks and perhaps as early as October 16. We’ll likely find out then what its upgrade plans are for its older Nexus devices.
