Apple iPhone 6 battery capacity revealed?

Apple iPhone 6 concept

With the next generation Apple iPhone expected to come with a larger display, many are wondering how Apple will deal with the increased power demands required by these larger panels. Rumours out of China today may have answered that question.

Citing unnamed “foreign media sources,” China’s Sohu reports that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will come with a battery with a capacity of between 1,800 and 1,900mAh. The larger 5.5-inch model could sport a 2,500mAh battery. These numbers may fail to impress when compared to some comparably sized Android devices. For example, devices with displays around 5.5 inches typically come with batteries at least 3,000mAh. Even the Amazon Fire smartphone and Nokia Lumia 625, both packing 4.7-inch display, come with batteries with a capacity of at least 2,000mAh.

At the same time, these are noticeably bigger batteries than the current iPhone models. Both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C sport a 1,570mAh battery.

While Apple may not have touted new battery saving technologies in the upcoming iOS 8 at WWDC 2014, that does not mean that none have been included.

Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 6 in early September. We’ll know then just how big the new batteries will be and we’ll know soon after if they measure up to the task of powering those larger displays the same way smaller batteries do on current iPhones.
