BlackBerry Passport shown off on video

BlackBerry PassportNone other than BlackBerry CEO John Chen showed off the upcoming BlackBerry Passport to BNN a few days back. As the name implies, BlackBerry’s latest device, codenamed Windermere during development, is about the size of a passport with a large square display, giving it a rather unique form factor. Chen described it as “the world’s smallest phablet or the world largest phone.”

The video is quite short but it does give you a sense of the size of it:

Confirmed specifications include a 4.5-inch 1440 by 1440 pixel display (480PPI) but other details have yet to be announced. Rumours have suggested that it will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, BlackBerry 10 (10.3 likely), 3GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera and a non-removeable 3,450mAh battery. It could also sport an innovative touch-capacitive keyboard that would recognize gestures as you swipe across the keys. For example, a swipe left could work as a backspace.

The BlackBerry Passport will launch in September. Specific availability, carrier and pricing details have yet to be announced. It will be followed by the BlackBerry Classic in November. There are also rumours that an LTE-enabled BlackBerry Z3 could hit North America before year’s end.
