Huawei unveiled its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate phablet at last year’s CES event. It’s back this year with its successor, the aptly named Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G. Billed as “Huawei’s new super performer that gives people around the world more power and a bigger screen to seize opportunities at every moment,” it brings a number of improvements over its predecessor while keeping the same-sized display.

“With HUAWEI Ascend Mate2 4G, we are bringing the benefits and convenience of superfast connectivity to people everywhere,” said Colin Giles, Executive Vice President, Huawei Consumer Business Group. “HUAWEI Ascend Mate2 4G is power-packed for the mobile generation who want non-stop entertainment on the go, such as the ability to snap and download photo albums in seconds or use their smartphone as their mobile office.”

Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G specifications:

  • Processor: 1.6GHz quad-core
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Huawei Emotion UI 2.0
  • Cellular connectivity: LTE
  • Other connectivity: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0
  • Display: 6.1-inch HD (720×1280) IPS
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Internal storage: 16GB
  • Rear-facing camera: 13MP BSI with f/2.0 aperture
  • Front-facing camera: 5MP
  • Battery: 4,050mAh
  • Dimensions: 9.5 millimeters thick

Its new Emotion 2.0 overlay comes with features such as One-Hand UI to enable single-handed operation, a Floating Window Function that offers access to notes, messages, calendar and calculator, a Gloves Mode that supports use while wearing gloves and a Driving Mode that enables voice activation. With the addition of that large battery, Huawei has also introduced Reverse Charging which lets you use the phone’s battery to charge other devices.

Accessories for the Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G include a Bluetooth earphone, a flip cover and colorful external battery packs.

There is no word on availability and pricing. Given that the original Ascend Mate made it to Canada courtesy of WIND Mobile, there is a good chance that the Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G will make its way here in the coming months.
