Chromecast firmware build 16664 update now rolling out

Google Chromecast

Google today began rolling out a new firmware update to its popular Chromecast device. Build 16664 will automatically hit your Chromecast sometime over the next week. It comes with the following changes:

  • Bug fixes and stability improvements
  • Chromecast audio volume level is retained across sessions
  • Improved IPv6 support
  • Improved DNS robustness

The Chromecast firmware update should happen the next time you turn it on. No prompting is necessary. If it is not available, simply check back later in the week.

Chromecast, available in the U.S. since last summer, landed in Canada last month. Once plugged into an HDMI port on your television, it lets you stream a variety of media content from a number of devices, including your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet. Supported apps include YouTube, Google Play Movies, Netflix, Songza and VEVO. The availability of a Chromecast SDK since February also means that new apps that can take advantage of it are being released all the time.

We reviewed the Chromecast when it first came out in the U.S. last summer.
