Google Chromecast adds Android screen mirroring capability

Google Chromecast screen mirroring

The Google Chromecast is finally getting a much demanded feature. First announced at Google I/O 2014, Chromecast is adding support screen casting from Android smartphones and tablets with version 1.7 of the Chromecast app.

Now, anything on your Android device will appear on the TV. You can share photos stored on your phone with a group of friends, or scope out the scenery for your next family vacation together on the big screen using Google Earth.

A new “Cast Screen” option has been added to the navigation drawer in the Chromecast app. Once the appropriate Chromecast device has been selected, you’ll be in business. The feature is also available through the quick settings menu on Nexus devices, meaning that you won’t even need the Chromecast app.

The feature is still in beta and currently only supports a limited selection of devices with Google promising that support for more devices is “coming soon.” They are as follows:

  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 7 (2013)
  • Nexus 10
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 (Google Play Edition)
  • Samsung Galaxy S5
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10
  • HTC One M7
  • HTC One M7 (Google Play Edition)
  • LG G3
  • LG G2
  • LG G Pro 2

Google will slowly roll out Chromecast version 1.7 to Google Play over the next few days. If you don’t see it yet, just check back every so often.
