Latest Chromecast update adds custom backdrop support

Google Chromecast BackdropGoogle has released a new firmware update for Chromecast. Version 1.8.22 comes with a feature first promised at Google I/O 2014 earlier this summer, the ability to use custom backdrops. While previous versions offered up some great backgrounds, you can now personalize the backdrop that better meets your tastes.

You’ve told us you love the photography that shows up on your TV when you’re taking a break from casting videos with Chromecast. But many of you have also told us you want to add your own photos on the screen. Now, you can.

Chromecast will first ask you if you want to use personalized backdrops. Once you say yes, you will be asked to choose from your own photos as well other sources including:

  • Amazing artwork from galleries and museums around the world via the Google Cultural Institute
  • News and lifestyle images from The New York Times, The Guardian, Saveur and more (U.S. only)
  • Satellite imagery of some of the hardest-to-reach places on Earth from Google Maps
  • and even more beautiful photos from the Google+ community

Digging into the APK further, Android Police has found that Google may soon also roll out the “Guest Mode” feature announced alongside custom backdrops at Google I/O 2014. Code in the APK shows that once enabled by someone on the same network, a guest will be able to connect either via a short audio tone detected by the device or a four digit PIN.

Guest Mode does not appear to be active yet. It’s likely that we could soon see another update to turn it on.

The Chromecast firmware update should happen the next time you turn your dongle on. No prompting is necessary. If it is not available, simply check back later in the week.
