LG will not build Google Nexus 6

Google NexusShould recent rumours that there will not be a Google Nexus 6 prove wrong, it now appears that LG will not be the company to build it. None other than LG’s Communications Director Ken Hong revealed to The Netherland’s Draadbreuk.nl that Google has yet to approach LG about such a partnership. Development lead times are such that the two companies should be deep in the project should they have been looking to launch it later this year. At this point, no such communications appear to have taken place according to Hong. “I know at least not yet. Normally, we were informed,” he explained during the interview, adding that, “That can mean two things. Either I got ignored, or we simply won’t be making [the Nexus 6].”

Hong added that developing a Nexus smartphone will give a company additional credibility but that turning a profit is difficult, likely because of the low price at which it is offered to customers. He also revealed that Google dictates how many units are to be manufactured and that any shortages (remember the Nexus 5 shortages?) were solely Google’s responsibility.

Hong’s comments do not rule out a Google Nexus 6, only that LG will not be behind it. With rumours that Google will replace the Nexus program with the new Android Silver one, it is also possible that LG is still working on a device for the new program but that it will not be called the Nexus 6.
