Microsoft Office for iPad announced

Microsoft Office for iPadMicrosoft’s new CEO Satya Nadella today announced at a press event that Microsoft Office for iPad is now available along with free Office Mobile apps for iPhone and Android phones. The Microsoft Office for iPad suite consists of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Office for iPad brings full file fidelity across Office on PC, Mac, tablet and phone, and along with cloud storage from OneDrive or OneDrive for Business your files are up to date, wherever you need them on whatever device you want to use. Office for iPad apps have a familiar look and feel that are unmistakably Office but are built from the ground up for iPad, factoring in the unique nature of touch and functionality native to iPad along with what people most commonly want to do on a tablet.

While Office for iPad will be available as a free download, functionality will be limited to reading and presenting documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Only Office 365 subscribers will have the additional ability to create and edit documents.

Content created with Office for iPad looks as it would on a PC or Mac computer. Despite having been created from the ground up for the iPad and supporting a touch based interface, document formatting is preserved across versions. Content can also be saved the cloud using OneDrive which also supports real-time collaboration to allow people to work simultaneously with others on the same documents.

Microsoft Office for iPad is now available for iPads running iOS 7.0 or later in 135 markets including Canada and the U.S.

Microsoft also announced that it is making Office Mobile for iPhone and Android phones free to everyone starting today. Both previously required a subscription like the iPad version does. Unlike Office for iPad, the free version will let you view and edit Office content on your smartphone.
