Sony readying 12-inch tablet for Q1 2015 launch?

SonyWhen it came time to unveil a new tablet alongside the new Xperia Z3 smartphone, Sony Mobile opted to go with the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Unlike the Xperia Z2 Tablet which came with a 10.1-inch display, the new tablet comes with an 8-inch WUXGA (1920×1200) display. Next year, Sony may go in the other direction and introduce a larger model. According to Digitimes, the Japanese company is readying a 12-inch tablet for launch in Q1 2015.

Sources suggest that this 12-inch Sony tablet will come with high-end specifications, including a stylus. It will likely target graphics-related markets. It will presumably be branded as an Xperia device and be water resistant like recent Xperia devices.

The report adds that Sony may not be the only manufacturer looking to get into the larger tablet market. It suggests that others are as well but does not name any. Could one of those be Apple? Rumours of a 12.9-inch Apple iPad resurfaced this summer after earlier word that the company had put this project on hold or cancelled it entirely.

Few 12-inch tablets are currently available. Both Microsoft and Samsung offer such models with the Surface Pro 3 and Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 respectively.
