Pebble may be hard at work on new devices and a platform that promises to be “unlike anything else used on smartwatches to date” but it has not forgotten about the original Pebble and Pebble Steel. It is continuing to enhance its Pebble smartwatch. The latest firmware, version 2.9, adds Android Wear compatibility. “If you can do it with Android Wear, you can do it with Pebble,” claims Pebble.
“Making the magic happen” requires both the new firmware as well as the new Pebble app (version 2.3.0). It allows replies and action on Android Wear notifications as well up to five “pebbler-defined replies” allowing for quick responses. It also enables automatic app and watchface updates when the Pebble is idle.
Integrating Pebble with Android Wear is thanks to the open approach Google built into Android’s notification system. Openness is a value Pebble shares and appreciates. We hope more mobile operating systems follow suit so all Pebblers—no matter their smartphone choice—can take advantage of all the delightful features we introduce now, and in the future.
An app update is also available to iOS users of the Pebble. Version 2.6.4 is a maintenance release that includes no new “major changes.”
