Samsung to have 64-bit processors in next generation Galaxy smartphones

Exynos 5 Octa

Apple may have been the first to pack a 64-bit processor into a smartphone with the new iPhone 5S introduced this week but it will not be the only one to do so for long. Speaking to The Korea Times, Samsung Mobile co-CEO JK Shin said that the next generation of Galaxy smartphones will also come with 64-bit processors. He did not provide a timeframe, saying only, “Not in the shortest time. But yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality.”

While Shin gives no clues as to what device could be the first to make the jump to 64-bit processing, is there really any other candidate than the Samsung Galaxy S5? It is likely to be the next flagship smartphone the South Korean manufacturer is likely to unveil (sometime in the first half of 2014) and it is arguably its device with the most cachet.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has already been the topic of rumours that suggest it will also come with a metal chassis and a 16MP camera.

It remains to be seen if Android 4.4 KitKat will support a 64-bit architecture. Google has announced few details about the next version of Android but hopefully we will learn more next month when it unveils its next Nexus smartphone with it onboard.

Samsung also already engaged in a fierce battle with Apple expects the competition to only get tougher especially in the lucrative Chinese smartphone market. According to an unnamed company executive, “Apple believes that it can boost its market share in China thanks to stronger brand awareness. However, with better pricing, a diversified product lineup and solid partnerships with local channels, Samsung plans to keep its current momentum in China. We have no reason to allow Apple to steal market share from us.”

It already sounds like 2014 could be as exciting as 2013 when it comes to smartphones.
