Apple Watch wins iF Design 2015 award

Yellow gold Apple Watch EditionThe fact that the Apple Watch has not yet launched as not stopped it from collecting its first award. It was awarded gold at the 2015 iF Design Awards.

The Apple Watch’s “revolutionary new technologies, a pioneering interface, and a design that honors the rich tradition of watchmaking” are among the reasons given for the decision.

According to the jury:

The idea of combining classic materials such as leather and metal with state-of-the-art technology to create a very individual fashion accessory has resulted in a delightful product offering a holistic user experience. The Apple Watch scores highly for each design detail and is an altogether extraordinary piece of design. For us, it is already an icon.

The iF International Forum Design awards have been handed out every year since 1954. Each year, more than 2,000 products are entered in a bid to win one of the prestigious awards.

The Apple Watch is also expected to be a winner with consumers. Apple suppliers have reportedly readied up to six million watches for launch alone. Analyst sales projections for 2015 have seen numbers as high as 26 million units as well.

The Apple Watch is expected to launch in April. The entry-level collection will start at US$349 (about CA$435) but is expected to be much steeper for the two higher-end collections. Specific availability and pricing details are expected at an Apple press event on Monday, March 9th.
