Pebble unveils Pebble Time smartwatch with colour display

Pebble Time

As expected, Pebble today unveiled a new smartwatch, the Pebble Time. As revealed yesterday, it is the first Pebble smartwatch with a colour display.

At its heart, Pebble Time is an awesome watch. The new color e-paper display is easy to read and always-on, perfect for displaying incoming notifications and your favorite watchface. Compared with display technology like LCD or OLED, power consumption is minimized, enabling Pebble Time to achieve an industry-leading battery life of up to 7 days.

The Pebble Time uses a  colour e-ink display protected by Gorilla Glass that offers both always-on capabilities and low power consumption and allowing its battery to last as long as 7 days. As rumours already revealed, the Pebble Time also comes with a slimmer design that is 9.5 millimeters thick.

The Pebble Time also introduces a new user interface aptly called Time.

You already plan your day around time, so it makes sense for your Pebble to be organized around the same principle. Now your notifications, news, reminders and events are laid out chronologically instead of being trapped inside separate apps.

One click lets you see what is coming up next or what just happened. Each button press takes you one step further in time, allowing you to chronologically scroll through notifications, events like yesterday’s step count or the score from a game last night.

The app menu features new app faces with glanceable content. Apps can also be incorporated into your timeline to make it easier to access apps when you need them.

Pebble returned to its roots to offer the Pebble Time by launching a new Kickstarter campaign for it:

Pebble was brought to life by 68,929 backers who supported our vision three years ago. Even though we’ve grown tremendously since then, we’re still a small company battling some of the largest competitors in the world. We believe that this is the best and most efficient way for us to get our latest product to the people who want it most: people like you.

Backers will be able to pick up the Pebble smartwatch for US$179 (the US$159 tier is already maxed out). The project topped its US$500,000 funding goal under twenty minutes and has now raised in excess of US$3 million.

Backers can choose from three different colour options:

  • Black watch case and silicone band with black PVD stainless steel bezel
  • White watch case and silicone band with silver PVD stainless steel bezel
  • Red watch case and silicone band with black PVD stainless steel bezel

When the Pebble Time hits retail stores, it will sell for US$199.
