Macromedia backtracks on $499 Flash Player for Pocket PC

Macromedia has reversed its decision to offer the Flash Player for Pocket PC only as part of a $499 bundle. On October 3 we decided to remove the free Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC from our site for various reasons. After doing so, however, you—our developer community—let us know that you were not happy with the decision.

The decision comes with strings though. Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC was released back in 2003 when Microsoft released their Pocket PC 2003 revision. In the two years since then, there have been several revisions of the Pocket PC OS, now referred to as Windows Mobile 5.0. Because of changes to the operating system and hardware of new devices, we cannot guarantee that Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC will work consistently when playing Flash content.

Developers are still recommended to get the $499 Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC Distribution Kit as the free download is provided “as-is” and comes with limited support (works only on WM2003).
