SanDisk microSD card

The SD Card Association (SDA) has approved the microSD specification. First announced in 2004 as TransFlash, the format was designed by SanDisk and Motorola.

SanDisk used the occasion to announce a 512MB card to be available in August. They also plan to release a 1GB card by the end of the year and a 2GB card in 2006.

MicroSD sales are expected to soar with 2006 seeing sales of over 250 million mobile phones with card slots, according to IDC.
