Microsoft’s Ya-Qin Zhang talks about Windows Mobile 6

Windows Mobile 5 is barely a month old that already Ya-Qin Zhang, Head of research for Windows Mobile, is thinking and talking a little bit about the next version of Windows Mobile. There are 3 areas of focus: The user interface, seamless connectivity in a multiradio environment (2.5G, 3G, WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, etc) and improving integration between mobile devices and other devices such as PCs, servers and the Web.

Zhang also talks about some of the limitations being faced today: Battery life, memory (more of it means less battery time) and displays and resolution limitations. Interestingly, he feels that bandwidth is becoming less and less of a factor.

While no code has been written yet, about 1000 engineers are already working on this next version which we can expect in late 2006 or 2007.

Meanwhile, expect to see Windows Mobile 5.0 in over 30 new devices in the next 12 months. We will see models with hard drives, 3G and/or DVD-quality VGA screens among these.
