Telefonica O2 sells its O2 Asia unit

O2

Telefonica O2 has announced that it is exiting the Asian device business market. The current O2 Asia management team will turn the unit into a new company called Mobile & Wireless Group (MWG). Mobile & Wireless Group (MWG) is a Singapore based start-up company established to develop and market premium, converged mobile devices. Founded by the team responsible for O2’s ground-breaking range of PDA-phones, MWG will meet growing global customer demand for customized devices with an emphasis on design, technology, reliability and service.

MWG has already announced that it will continue to develop Windows Mobile devices under a new brand starting in 2008. Its new web site already promises a new Xda Atom 4, Xda Flame 2 and Xda Zinc 2. It will also take over O2 Asia’s current service and warranty obligations.

The transition is expected to be completed within the next few months and MWG has already lined up Expansys as a potential investor.
