Wireless coverage reaches top of Mount Everest

China Mobile and its Tibetan subsidiary Tibet Mobile have successfully tested wireless transmissions around Mount Everest. It installed three stations, the highest at 21,325 feet, to provide wireless coverage along the route used to climb Mount Everest.

Before you make plans to take your mobile phone with you on your next Everest climb, be aware that the top station has been shut down for the winter. It will be reactivated when the Olympic flame makes its way to the peak next year before the Olympics.

It’s not clear if coverage at the top of the world is 3G or slower.
