Apple releases new iPhone and iPod touch firmware

Apple has released a new firmware for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch. Version 2.2 offers a number of new features and improvements.

Among the new features are a number of enhancements for Google Maps. These include the addition of Google Street View, public transit and walking directions, and the ability to send a Google Maps URL via email. Also new is the ability to download podcasts via Wi-Fi or 3G directly to the device. Among the enhancements are a decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls, improved HTML formatting, stability and performance improvements for Safari, improved sound quality for Visual Voicemail, and the ability to turn off the keyboard auto-correction mode. The update for the two devices is quite similar except that the iPod touch updates does not include the new Google Maps features and telephony features.

Apple also released iTunes 8.0.2 with a number of stability and performance improvements.
