Garmin planning Android-powered mobile phone

A DigiTimes report about Garmin GPS personal navigation devices (PNDs) revealed that the company is planning to launch Android handsets in the second half of 2009. The company will do the development of the new handsets but will outsource production.

Garmin is already a member of the Open Handset Alliance so the story is certainly plausible.

The report also indicated that the Garmin nüvifone will hit the Taiwanese market in the second quarter of 2009.

Garmin was not too pleased with the report though. It issued a press release disputing the DigiTimes report, indicating that it contains a number of inaccuracies in both sales figures and product rollout schedules.
