iTunes leads all U.S. music retailers for first half of 2008

According to the NPD Group, Apple topped the list of music retailers in the U.S. for the first half of 2008. It took an early lead in January and February and the latest MusicWatch consumer surveys indicate that it never relinquished it.

The top five retailers, based on on purchases of CDs and a-la-carte digital music downloads, are Apple iTunes, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Amazon and Target.

The latest results continue to show the declining sales of physical CDs in favour of digital music.
