SanDisk announces 72GB SSD and 12GB microSD card

SanDisk announced a new slimmed-down Serial ATA (SATA II) SSD at CES 2008. Aimed at ultralight notebooks, the new drive is only 5mm thick and weighs 40 grams. It also consumes only .85 watts in read/write mode and .2W when idle.

Offering capacity up to 72GB, the new drives will be available starting in the second quarter of 2008 and should appear in new laptops later in the year.

SanDisk has also announced a 12GB microSDHC card, marking a 50 percent increase in card capacity over the current 8GB cards. Such a card would allow for storage of up to a combination of 1,500 songs, 3,600 photos and 24.5 hours of video for example.

The SanDisk 12GB SDHC card is currently being sampled by major phone manufacturers for testing and evaluation.
