R.I.P.: Garmin-Asus custom Linux operating system

Garmin-Asus nuvifone G60

We’re approaching the second half of 2009 and the promised Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 has yet to appear. Today, at CommunicAsia, Garmin-Asus announced that both the nüvifone G60 and the M20 will be available in the second half of the year. In some markets, it could be out as early as August (I’ll believe it when I see it at this point).

More interesting is the revelation that Garmin-Asus will use Google Android and Windows Mobile as their operating systems for future devices. As a result, the nüvifone G60 will be the only device to run their own custom Linux operating system. The development of this operating system is likely the culprit for the delays in releasing the G60.

Garmin-Asus also announced that their first Android device will be released before the end of the year (ahead of what earlier rumours suggested). It sounds like you will need to move quickly if you want to get your hands on a nüvifone G60 as it appears that it is not destined to be around for long.
