T-Mobile set to release Android-powered G2?

T-Mobile

I missed this news item in mid-December as I was traveling but thought it was interesting enough to post about. If rumours are true, T-Mobile and HTC are hard at work on the G2, the successor to the successful G1 and it could be out as early as later this month (although other rumours push it out as far as April).

In terms of specs, the G2 will be powered by Google Android. It will come with GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 3G connectivity, a touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, a 5MP auto-focus camera, a secondary front-facing VGA camera, and a memory card slot (supporting cards up to 16GB). It will also come with support for the T-Mobile myFaves and T-Zones.

Unlike the G1, there is no physical keyboard, indicating that this feature will be ready in time for the G2. It will have a trackball at the bottom of the device.

Since the story broke in mid-December, I have not seen much more about a G2 short of additional clues that HTC is working on follow-up devices not only for T-Mobile but also for Vodafone and NTT DoCoMo. I think it goes without question that HTC is working on new Android devices and the only real question is where and when will we see them.
