That does not mean that there will not be an Android 2.4 version after all. A Sony Ericsson Xperia arc has been spotted running said version.
Tweakers.net which made the discovery suggests that this will be a minor update (likely to also be known as Gingerbread). It’s not clear what this build will include but there is some evidence that it could add video calling. It could also include some smaller features and bug fixes.
