Samsung Galaxy Grand: Love child of the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III?

Samsung’s smartphone portfolio already covers everything from the entry-level right up to the high-end devices. Two of its current flagship smartphones, the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III with their large 5.5-inch and 4.8-inch displays, may soon the top a bit more crowded. According to South Korean MT, Samsung could soon launch a 5-inch display handset that shares characteristics with both devices as the image below shows. But unlike many upcoming 5-inch display smartphones, it would fill a rather unique niche.

Samsung Galaxy Grand

Rumoured Samsung Galaxy Grand specifications:

  • Processor: 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos 4412
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.1.1
  • Cellular connectivity: LTE
  • Other connectivity: 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, NFC
  • Display: 5-inch WVGA (800×480)
  • Input: Touchscreen
  • Battery: 2,100mAh

Interestingly, this may not be a new flagship device but one marketed with a unique twist. Rather than a high-resolution display, it would come with a lower one as it would be aimed at older users or those with poorer eyesight. A large display combined with a lower resolution would result in larger text and icons, likely making it easier to read.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand appears to bear two model numbers (SHV-E270K and SHV-E270L), suggesting that one could be a South Korea-only model and the other intended for other markets. At 800,000 Korean wons (about CA$730), it does not look like it will be a cheap handset.
