Google Android 4.x now on 25% of all devices but Android 2.3 still rules

The latest Android distribution numbers are out and Android 2.3 Gingerbread remains the king of all Android versions. Gingerbread still accounts for 55.8% of all devices that accessed Google Play over the 14 day period that ended on October 1st. That’s down ever so slightly from 57.5% the previous period. Android 4.0.x Ice Cream grew to 23.7% from 20.8% and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean from 1.2% to 1.8% over the same period.

Jelly Bean numbers are poised for a bit of a jump with a number of upgrades scheduled for October. A number of ASUS Transformer tablets have already received updates and devices like the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and HTC One S will be joining them shortly. New devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the just announced HTC One X+ should also help those numbers.

Unfortunately, Google will have to look over at Apple with continued envy. About 25% of all iOS devices were upgraded to iOS 6 within days of its release.
