Mobile commerce coming to MTS in 2013

MTSMTS today announced that it bring secure mobile payment technology to Manitoba in 2013 after signing an initial agreement with EnStream LP, a joint venture between Bell, TELUS and Rogers focused on mobile payments. It will allow MTS customers to make payments using supported smartphones and mobile devices.

“mCommerce will quickly become the way people go about their day-to-day business, and MTS is proud to be among the first providers in Canada to give their customers access to this important and innovative technology,” said MTS President Kelvin Shepherd.

The initial agreement allows MTS to use EnStream’s Secure Element Management (SEM) platform, a technology developed by Research In Motion to manage credentials on wireless handsets supporting NFC. While developed by RIM, SEM can be supported not only on BlackBerry smartphones but also on Android and Windows Phone devices.

SEM will also be enhanced to become a digital wallet. It will eventually allow customers to load payment cards as well as other credential-based information such as loyalty program cards, transit passes, and library cards.
