Rumour: Apple iPad mini to take on Google Nexus 7

AppleRumours about an Apple iPad mini have resurfaced again. Reports by both Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal indicate that Apple is readying a cheaper and smaller iPad for launch by the end of the year.

Bloomberg indicates that the new iPad will have a display between 7- and 8-inches. Unlike previous rumours, it adds that it will not come with a high-resolution display (like that on Apple’s latest iPad). It could be priced as low as US$199, a price point that would put in direct competition with the Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire.

The Wall Street Journal does not add any details about specifications but suggests that Apple has told its suppliers to prepare for mass production. Suppliers named include LG Display Co. and AU Optronics Co., both of whom have worked with Apple in the past.

Apple could announce the new iPad in October with availability to follow in time for the holiday season.
