Sony launches Xperia GX and Xperia SX for Japanese market

Sony Mobile Japan this week announced the Xperia GX and the Xperia SX. The two are Sony’s first LTE devices for the Japanese market and promise download speeds up to 75Mbps. The Xperia GX follows in the Xperia arc’s footsteps with a slim body (8.6 millimeters thick) and a matte finish. The Xperia SX is billed as the world’s lightest LTE smartphone at just 95 grams.

According to Xperia Blog, the Xperia GX was codenamed Mint during development. The Sony LT29i ‘Hayabusa’ will apparently be a variant without LTE connectivity.

Sony Mobile Japan did not provide full specifications but here is what we know so far:

  • Dimensions / weight: 9.4 millimeters thick / 95 grams
  • Other: Infrared port, mobile wallet and mobile TV

Three new Sony mobile apps with launch with these new smartphones. A Walkman app will come with audio enhancements such as VPT surround sound, a visualizer and manual equalizers. The Album app will offer photo and video browsing as well as social sharing tools. The Movies app will provide information (from Gracenote’s database of media information) about a movie being watched.

Both the Xperia GX and Xperia SX are expected to launch in Japan this summer. An international release is expected to follow afterwards.
