CEO John Chen outlines new strategy in latest BlackBerry open letter

Blackberry Executive Chair and CEO John S. Chen

BlackBerry’s new CEO John Chen has again picked up a pen to write an open letter. This latest one, called ‘BlackBerry: The way forward,’ was published today on CNBC and vows that “the journey has just begun.” Much as he has done in recent weeks, the letter reiterates that BlackBerry has adopted a new strategy that will focus on enterprise customers, including mobile-device management, BBM, QNX and a streamlined devices group that will see Foxconn manage the lower-end devices in a new 5-year deal while BlackBerry focuses its own attentions on higher-end devices.

It’s been easy for competitors to promote negative stories about BlackBerry, focusing on the business of the past. But I’m not focused on who BlackBerry used to be — I’m focused on what BlackBerry will be today and in the future.

Today, our company is strong financially, technologically savvy and is well-positioned for the future. In less than two months, my team and I have engineered a new strategy to stabilize the company, return to our core strength in enterprise and security, and maximize efficiencies.

Acknowledging that BlackBerry is still facing “challenging circumstances,” Chen wrote that the company still has “strong cash position with more than $3 billion on hand, a renewed spirit, and trusted technology, network and platform” and expects BlackBerry to re-emerge as a “nimbler, more agile competitor.”

If nothing else, this latest BlackBerry open letter shows that the company is not going down without a fight!
