More details about Samsung Galaxy Round

Samsung flexible displayNew information about the Samsung Galaxy Round has quickly emerged following LG’s announcement that it was set to begin mass production of its first flexible display for smartphones.

Samsung Display has reportedly announced that it has already begun mass production of its own 5.7-inch flexible displays and that Samsung will release a device sporting the new display “within days.”

It adds that its display is 0.12 millimeters thin and weighs 5.2 grams. Slightly smaller than LG’s own 6-inch flexible display, it is significantly thinner and lighter. It also has a curvature radius of 400 millimeters, allowing it to bend more than LG’s.

Samsung’s 5.7-inch flexible displays are being produced on a 5.5 generation assembly line that can produce some 8,000 substrate sheets a month. It should allow Samsung to produce several hundred thousand smartphone panels per month.

A separate report indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Round will share some specifications with the Galaxy Note 3. It should be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and Google Android 4.3. One major difference from the Galaxy Note 3 is that it will not support Samsung’s S-Pen technology.

The RBMen report also describes the screen’s curvature as being “along the contour of the face” to better fit against a person’s face when making a call. An earlier report described it as curving side to side.

All should be revealed later this week.
