Huawei will not buy competitor to grow smartphone market share

It would appear that you can take Huawei off the list of potential BlackBerry suitors. Senior vice president and board member Chen Lifang said in an interview that the Chinese company was not looking to acquire any competitors in a bid to grow its smartphone presence. “We haven’t considered (an acquisition),” she explained. “We want to rely on ourselves.”

Huawei was recently linked to a potential Nokia acquisition. If it did make a bid for the Finnish manufacturer, it was beaten to the punch by Microsoft which sealed the US$7.2 billion deal yesterday. Huawei also recently hired ex-Nokia executive Colin Giles to head up its Consumer Business Group.

Huawei also signed an architecture licensing deal with processor design company ARM. The move will allow it to design its own processor cores for a variety of products possibly including future smartphone and tablet devices.
