Introducing the Phonebloks modular smartphone concept

Phonebloks concept smartphoneWhat do you get when you cross LEGO with a smartphone? Imagine that rather than upgrading your entire phone, you could simply pop off the one component you want to replace it with a new one. Or simply customize it with a better camera before leaving on that trip? That’s the idea behind the Phonebloks modular smartphone concept.

It all starts with a base plate that takes care of ensuring that all the different components work together. Each key phone component, the display, the camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or battery for example, is a different block that plugs into the base. Two small screws at the base of the phone keep it together when you’re done. Like LEGO, you simply clip on the modules you want, take off the ones you don’t want, and away you go. As the video below illustrates, you could opt for a larger battery at the expense of storage on the device if you use cloud storage, or a bigger speaker if you’re a music lover. Components would be available online through the “Blok-Store” and perhaps even at your local store.

At this point, Phonebloks is just a concept but its creators are hoping that a social media campaign will attract the attention of people interested in taking it to the next level. If you’re interested, sign up at the project’s Thunderclap.it page and wait for October 29th when all the messages gathered will go out at the same time.  With a month to go on the campaign, the project has already reached 82% of its goal of 50,000 supporters.

There is no question that this is an interesting idea. Whether it can become reality at an affordable price remains to be seen though.
