What is the Moto G that Motorola just trademarked?

USPTO filing for Moto GIf a US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) application is any indication, Motorola is working on something called the Moto G. Exactly what it is remains as a mystery as the USPTO filing reveals only that it could be any number of things: “Mobile phones, smartphones and accessories therefor, namely battery chargers, adapters and removable covers.”

Let’s have a bit of fun and conjecture a bit, shall we? Phandroid, the ones who found the filing, suggest it could be a Google Play Edition of the Moto X with G standing for Google. Rumours of such a device first surfaced shortly after the Moto X was announced.

For its part, Droid-Life has heard from a Verizon source that a Moto G is “coming soon.” They add that there is no evidence at this time to back up this claim though. Verizon already carries the Moto X so it’s unlikely to simply be a variant.

Here’s our theory. Could the Moto X be the name of the cheaper variant of the Moto X that we’ve heard about several times? The Motorola DVX has been the topic of rumours since the start of summer. If it is indeed coming to Verizon as the Moto G, it could do so at the same time that Verizon is expected to get access to Motomaker for the Moto X. It could also be headed to other carriers, including Republic Wireless, a prepaid U.S. carrier.

Little is known about the DVX except that it could come with a choice of four different backplates: Black, white, pink and green.

Feel free to chime in below with your own theory as to what the Moto G could be.
