Samsung shows off folding smartphone concept video

Samsung folding smartphone concept

Samsung today showed off its vision for future foldable smartphones at the MobileBeat conference in San Francisco. Presented by the company’s strategy chief, Young Sohn, the video shows two women using folding smartphones. One of the women also pairs a disposable sensor to her smartphone to collect health information and send it immediately to her doctor.

Samsung’s vision focuses on the healthcare sector and the video emphasized the uses of wearable technology in this area. “We think the health area is a really key area of innovation,” explained Sohn. But it’s not the only one that will benefit: Samsung expects that wearable technology will make its way into clothing, glasses, watches and other products. In fact, examples already exist: Google Glass and the Sony SmartWatch 2 are such two devices.

The video also shows how the thickness of the display can dictate what colour it displays. For example, the device could be blue when folded up but turn to orange when opened up to increase screen real estate. A mechanism dictates the thickness of the component with different colours being produced by different reflection angles.

We could see some very innovative devices over the next few years.
