Upcoming LG Odin SoC to come in quad- and octa-core versions

LG Electronics

LG looks to be the latest manufacturer to get into the mobile processor business. It’s not the first time that there have been rumours about a SoC currently known as Odin. But a report by South Korea’s DigitalTimes reportedly sheds new light on what LG could have in mind.

It appears that LG’s Odin SoC will in fact come in two flavours, a quad-core one and an octa-core one. The quad-core version will use Cortex-A15 cores paired to a Mali T604 GPU. The octa-core version will use ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture and come with four 2.0GHz Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.4GHz Cortex-A7 ones along with a Mali-T760 GPU.

An unnamed “industry official” added that LG is likely to use the quad-core version in consumer electronics, including TVs. The octa-core one will make its way into smartphones and tablets, likely in its new flagship G line currently represented by the LG G2 and LG G Pad 8.3.

As LG has no facilities to produce SoCs, production will be handled by TSMC.

There is no word yet on when LG could launch its Odin of SoCs.

2014 shaping up to be the year of the octa-core flagship devices!
