Android L coming to Moto X and Moto G this fall? (Updated)

Google I/O 2014 keynoteAs with any announcement of a major update (or any update for that matter) of an operating system, the question quickly turns to when users will be able to upgrade. The announcement of Android L at yesterday’s Google I/O 2014 keynote was no exception. By releasing early factory images of the new operating system for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, Google effectively confirmed that both will be updated. HTC followed up quickly with its own announcement that it would update the HTC One (M7) and HTC One (M8) to the latest version of Android within 90 days of receiving the final code. Motorola’s plans were revealed today courtesy of its German division.

Motorola Germany took to Facebook to announce that Android 5.0 will come to the Moto X and Moto G later this fall. If correct, this suggests that Motorola will update its devices possibly as quickly as Google will update its Nexus line.

Perhaps more interesting is that it appears that Motorola has also confirmed the version number that Android L will carry when it launches. Its posts call the update Android 5.0 rather than Android L. For whatever reason, Google had omitted to reveal this small detail during its Android L keynote presentation.

Asked about an Android L update for the Moto E by a Facebook user, Motorola Germany added that it was still looking to see if such an upgrade was even possible. Should it prove impossible, likely because of hardware limitations, Motorola Germany said that the company would then offer an update to Android One, Google’s new initiative aimed at inexpensive Android devices like the Moto E.

We’ll keep an eye out for a formal Motorola announcement to confirm that these are indeed the company’s plans just to be sure.

Update (6/28/2014): It was too good to be true. The real Motorola Germany has taken to Facebook to say that the Facebook profile that confirmed the Android L updates is fake. It added that “all relevant information about Motorola” posted on Facebook will only be found on the official Motorola Facebook page.
