Apple iWatch to skip WWDC

Apple WWDC 2014

Apple’s next Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is coming up fast. Set to take place this year from June 2 to June 6, the rumour mill has been busy trying to predict what Apple will unveil this time around. Rumours have at one point or another suggested new iPhones and iPads, a new Apple TV set top box and even the Apple iWatch. But Re/code and 9to5Mac have both learned that the event is likely to focus less on hardware and more on software. The big announcements are expected to be OS X 10.10 and iOS 8. Apple could also unveil its Healthbook app as it follows other device manufacturers into the health and fitness market.

If you’ve been anticipating the debut of some new category-defining hardware at Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference, a word of advice: Dial back your expectations or be disappointed. Sources familiar with Apple’s plans tell Code/red that Tim Cook will not use WWDC to unveil Apple’s mythical wearable device. Nor will he use it to show off a new Apple TV, or even preview the new software the company is developing for it.

Apple’s new hardware looks set to follow later in the year. Rumours suggest a very busy second half of the year for Apple. It could unveil an updated iPad Air and iPad mini lineup, the iWatch, possibly in two sizes and a new iPhone with a 4.7-inch display in Q3. The following quarter, it is set to unveil an updated Apple TV and a new 12-inch MacBook Air along with a refresh for the MacBook Pro line. Announcements are expected to culminate with a new 5.5-inch iPhone just in time for the holidays.

Similar rumours have suggested that Google I/O 2014 will also focus on new Google services rather than Android and new devices. A separate event could follow a month later could be used to announce Android 4.5 and the Google Nexus 8 tablet.
