Concept Sunday: MOOV fitness band for the rest of us

MOOV smartwatch concept

The smartwatch market is exploding. Manufacturers are rushing to get a toehold in the nascent market with devices that do far more than just tell the time. Just this week, Apple gave us a preview of the Apple Watch coming in early 2015. One area that is exploding in parallel is the collection of health and fitness data using a range of wearables. But not everyone looking to strap a smartwatch is quite ready to pore over the data from the last run or fitness workout to eke out a bit more performance the next time. For those who know that fitness is important but still require more prodding and cajoling to be more active, Xinyi Wang has come up with the MOOV.

From a physical perspective, the MOOV is very similar to other fitness bands we have already seen. A narrow rectangular display showcases a minimalistic user interface. It is available in a range of case finishes and coloured wristbands to ensure it always matches your outfit. Few details are provided about the specifications but it appears to come with a range of sensors including a pedometer and heart beat monitor.

Where the MOOV differs from most other smartwatches or fitness bands is that it not only tracks your daily activities but also helps improve your fitness habits by challenging you with a variety of small tasks. Over time, it will learn when you’re more likely to accept one of its challenges and schedule them around these times to help you become more active. It can also tailor the intensity of the workout to your preferences.

While the MOOV may never become reality, we may well see other devices adopt this approach of helping people become more active by offering a range of smaller and easily achievable fitness tasks.

Would you want your fitness band or smartwatch to challenge you to be more active? Let us know below.
