Google to release Android build KTU65 as Android 4.4.3?

Google Android KTU65 buildA new update to Android KitKat may be just around the corner. A new build, identified as KTU65, has been spotted running on a Google Nexus 5. The discovery was made by Myce on the Chromium forum. Initially flagged as ‘Google Restrict View’ so that only Google employees could see it, it is now visible publicly. This Android build KTU65, or a future one if other bugs remain that need to be fixed, will presumably be released as Android 4.4.3 as a maintenance update.

An update to Android 4.4.2 is widely expected given that this version introduced a bug can rapidly drain the battery in certain circumstances on the Nexus 5 and other devices. A fix for this “current high CPU” issue has been found and should be included in the next maintenance release.

According to Google’s convention, the first letter of a build is also the first letter of the dessert name associated with that release. Subsequent letters refer to the release branch and a date code. Myce suggests that KTU65 is fairly new with a date of March 6, 2014.

The post itself is in reference to a bug in Gmail when running Android build KTU65. At this point, the bug is marked as ‘WontFix’ as it appears that the Gmail team will address it in the app itself instead.

There is no word on when Android could release this build or a more recent one. It’s not even sure that it would be released as Android 4.4.3 at this point.

Rumours have also started swirling about Android 4.5. It could be unveiled at Google I/O 2014 and make its debut on a new Nexus tablet as early as July.
