LG to build Google Nexus 6 and Nexus smartwatch?

Google Nexus

We already know that Google is planning to launch the Google Nexus 6 sometime in the second half of the year. That much has already been confirmed by none other than Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps. Now comes word via Gizmodo.de that LG has been tapped once more to build the next Nexus smartphone. Their source adds that LG will also build Google’s first Nexus smartwatch.

Much as LG did with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, it would use its next flagship device, the still-only-rumoured LG G3, as the basis for the new Nexus smartphone. Given that the Nexus 4 was based on the LG Optimus G and the Nexus 5 on the LG G2, the move is certainly plausible.

The report adds that LG could launch the LG G3 earlier than it launched previous flagship smartphones. An announcement could come as early as June, slightly later than earlier rumours have suggested.

Recent rumours have suggested that the LG G3 could come with an octa-core processor developed by LG, WQHD (2560×1440) display and a 16MP camera.  It could also feature a multifunctional backside button.

This latest rumour appears to contradict an earlier one that suggested that Lenovo might be behind the next Nexus smartphone although it might have been chosen for a Nexus tablet instead (or was HTC chosen?).

No specific timelines were provided but new Nexus smartphones have launched in the fall in recent years. It’s likely that the Nexus 6 will launch roughly around the same time.
